Solidarity Economy

This is the spot where we highlight the small portion of platforms with big ideas about a brand new way to organize the economy, and create people-first organizations and platforms. Here’s a brief description of each type.

A Cooperative is an alternative to privately-owned businesses or public corporations. Cooperative platforms are literally owned by the people who use them, and the developers who create them. All decisions are made democratically, and every member gets a vote.

Shared Ownership is a hybrid model where sellers/members get a vote in big decisions and elected representation on the board.

Free and Open Source Software is an alternative to privately-owned software and Big Tech. This software is powered by volunteers and donations, and driven by community needs. Typically paid upgrades are available, so that a small team of developers can be paid for their time. There are free and open source online store builders, many of which make amazing options for creators to sell their work online. For now, we’ve just got Woocommerce, since that’s what Kristi uses in her online store, but there are more! We plan to gradually investigate them all and add them to our Etsy Alternatives database!
